Bright Ideas: So Light It Floats

Innovation: An Advanced, Class A Composite so Light it Floats

Award Category: Unsurpassed Innovation, 2025 CAMX Award finalist

Company: CSP

Objective: This material is a new, ultra-lightweight composite material for automotive applications. Called TCA Float™, this material provides a sub-1.0 specific gravity density with a Class A surface that is also e-coat oven capable.

Results: This ultra-low density is achieved through the use of hollow glass microspheres as a replacement for traditional, heavier fillers. These glass microspheres are treated with a CSP-patented surface treatment that greatly increases the interfacial bonding of the glass microsphere to the resin matrix.

Impact: This is significant because the resin/bubble interface plays a key role in mechanical properties, paint adhesion, and bond strength of the material.

From the Expert: “We are constantly looking for ways to make our materials lighter, stronger, and more sustainable. TCA Float was named because our intention was to create a material so light it would literally float on water. This material provides an ultra-lightweight solution where a Class A surface is needed, but part weight is a consideration, especially for something like a removable roof panel. Ultimately, TCA Float improves upon our TCA® portfolio with the same base resin chemistry that has allowed us to be the industry leader in Class A SMC for over twenty years.” ~Mike Siwajek, vice president, CSP Research & Development
